“Welcome to where I was born – the fishing village of Nhơn Lý”
This website is not intended to deny the tourism value of my hometown, nor is it meant to solicit bookings or sell tours. I write for those who are planning to visit Nhơn Lý, but are looking for something deeper than hurried check-in photos.
in the usual sense, you’ll probably find it… not worth it
and the skin-scorching sun
Many people who come to Quy Nhơn often tell each other: “If you haven’t been to Kỳ Co – Eo Gió, you haven’t really been to Quy Nhơn.” True, this place has crystal-clear blue seas, moss-covered stone paths, and vibrant mural villages. But let’s look at reality for a moment:
The moment you step off the bus, what greets you isn’t a cool, refreshing breeze, but a scorching sun and the salty, biting sea air slapping you in the face.
Under the harsh midday sun, you line up, strain to strike a pose just to get that “thousand-likes” photo. For couples in love, it’s a memory. But for the elderly and young children, it’s truly an ordeal. Seeing kids with cheeks flushed red from the sun, I know they’re not enjoying it at all.
After wrestling with sun and wind at Kỳ Co, Hòn Sẹo, Eo Gió… you sit down to a table piled high with shrimp, fish, and squid. But when exhaustion has seeped into your bones and hunger clouds your eyes, can you really savor the sweetness of the sea, or are you just eating to regain strength so you can head back?
để trải nghiệm
Thay vì đi du lịch 1 ngày chớp nhoáng. Dành một khoảng thời gian, hãy thử ở lại Nhơn Lý 3-5 ngày. Sống chậm lại, hít thở cùng nhịp thở của làng chài.
In Nhơn Lý, take just a few steps and you’ll see the sea. You don’t necessarily have to look for expensive resorts or rooms right by the shore. Choose a clean, airy space in the village, somewhere with a small kitchen so you can try your hand at making a few local dishes.
Back in my hometown, sometimes a meal consists of just one single dish: Cá Nấu Mẵn. All it takes is a pot of boiling water, a bit of scallion, pepper, chili, garlic, and some mackerel, anchovies, or scad fish just brought up from the boat, still shimmering silver. The gentle sweetness of fresh fish combined with the fiery kick of chili… trust me, that’s a knock-your-socks-off flavor no fancy restaurant can ever deliver.
You don’t need to spend money on tickets if you know how to make use of the right timing and your own two feet:
Eo Gio at dawn – Ky Co by land
Wake up really early, walk through the small alleys in the village (less than 1 km). Watching Eo Gio in the early morning, when there are no tourists yet, is when you truly see the grandeur of the two rocky mountain ranges embracing the blue sea.
If you enjoy hiking, follow the trail from the northern side toward Eo Gio. Or try watching the sunset here once — a place dubbed the most beautiful sunset-viewing spot in Vietnam
Instead of taking a speedboat, try walking about 6 km. This route offers breathtaking views of the bay that boat or car travelers can hardly fully appreciate.
but note: Not for the seasick!
If you think going to sea is a leisurely “stroll” over the waves, you’re mistaken. Being a fisherman is one of the most grueling and risky professions.
While the mainland is getting ready to turn off the lights and go to sleep, the fishermen of Nhơn Lý begin heading out to sea. A night drifting on the ocean is a night facing fierce waves, sudden gusts of wind, and the bone-chilling cold of the night sea. In the vast ocean, the little boat becomes incredibly small.
Behind each haul of nets are calloused hands, sun-darkened shoulders hauling nets for hours on end without rest. Just a moment of carelessness, and the waves and storms can swallow everything. Fishermen who go to sea carry not only the hope of making a living, but also the anxieties of families waiting on shore.
but note: Not for the seasick!
If daytime experiences aren’t enough to satisfy you, try becoming a “night hunter” just once on a round basket boat or a small skiff. Squid fishing is not just a pastime; it’s a test of patience and skill, filled with moments of emotional exhilaration.
When darkness falls, the high-intensity lamps from the fishing boats begin to illuminate a stretch of water, looking like shimmering “floating cities.” This light isn’t just for visibility—it’s a sweet “trap” that draws schools of squid in. Sitting in that space, surrounded by the soft murmur of waves and a sky glittering with stars, you’ll feel completely cut off from the noisy world.
Squid fishing doesn’t use real bait, but colorful, sparkling artificial lures. The most fascinating part is the sensation of gently “working” the line, creating rhythmic movements to fool the crafty squid. When you feel the rod tip grow heavy, or a decisive tug from below, that’s the moment your heart starts racing like never before.
Lifting a leaf squid or a glassy tube squid by hand, its translucent body shimmering and constantly changing color the instant it leaves the water, is an intensely thrilling experience. And trust me—there’s no squid in the world tastier than one just hauled up, still spurting jet-black ink, steamed on the spot or eaten raw in true “fisherman’s sashimi” style right in the middle of the sea. The sweetness, the satisfying crunch, and the briny aroma of the ocean will make any angler nod in pure satisfaction.
Seeing you stay up with them, waiting alongside them, the fishermen will readily scoop a handful of glistening fresh fish into your basket with a gentle smile: “Take it home and cook some soup, kid!”
Don’t wait for anything else—ask for a bit of dry firewood and light a stove right there on the sand. Fish just lifted from the net, still slick and carrying the salty taste of the sea, can be steamed or grilled. Roll it up with Bình Định rice paper and dip it in fiery fish sauce.
